Mr. Anderson's 3rd Grade Class

"Our Class"

Math:  In Math, we continue to learn about problem solving, rounding numbers, counting money, using tables and soon we will begin learning about median, mode and range.

Reading:  During our Reading block, we have just started a new theme called disasters.  This theme teaches about natural and man-made disasters.  The new story that we have started reading is called, The Titanic...Lost and Found.  In this unit, students will learn about the great Titanic disaster of 1912, main ideas, supporting details, combining sentences, word endings -er and -est, verbs in the present and much more.  One of our large projects within this unit is where each student will select the name of a real survivor, research this survivor and write a story retelling the events of the Titanic disaster and compile a collague of Titanic photos to go along with their story, then present it to the class.  This unit will take a few weeks before we move onto learning about Pompeii, Italy, that was buried alive by a massive volcanic eruption.  The kids really enjoy these stories and projects that we complete and I am looking forward to seeing the final completed projects.

Social Studies:  Our class read a chapter book titled, Squanto:  Friend of the Pilgrims.  In this book, we learned a lot about a Native American named Squanto who helped the pilgrims learn how to survive in the new world.  From this book, our class learned a lot about the first Thanksgiving and the meaning of Thanksgiving.

Writing:  During our Writing block, we are currently working on a winter creative writing story and cursive writing when we are able to fit it in.

Science:  During our Science block, all students have selected a planet to research and are currently working on a project to present to the class.  We will also learn about comets and asteroids very soon.  It has been a fun unit and the students seem to really enjoy learning about the solar system.

REMINDERS!!!

MAP Testing on Monday, January 25th  9:45-11:15 a.m. (Reading) and Wednesday 8:15-9:45 a.m. (Math) in the computer lab.

Since we no longer have milk break, we are trying something new for our snack time each day.  All students are responsible to bring in their own healthy snack each day.  Some great items would be some crackers, veggies in a bag, fruit snacks, etc.  Students may also bring in a small juice box to have during snack if they wish as well.  This is something we are just trying and if anything changes, a note will come home informing parents about any changes.
