Upcoming Events at School:

Book it Movie for January:  Friday, Feb. 5th

Valentine's Day Party:  Feb. 12th

No School Feb. 19th

**Mrs. Shay will be gone on maternity leave for 10 weeks.  Mrs. Bolstad will be our long term sub!**

**Snack:  We will continue our morning snack time, but each student needs to bring in their own food (fruit, crackers, fruit snacks, cereal).  The box can be left at school with the child's name on it or sent each day in their backpacks.

WELCOME TO 2ND GRADE!

Reading/Language Arts:

During the past month we have read some wonderful stories about becoming friends, schools from around the world, a biography about Helen Keller and a humorous story about Officer Buckle.  The skills we have practiced have included:  compound words, long a, o, and e, quotation marks, proper nouns and abbreviations.  We have completed our pilot with the Houghton Mifflin series.  We have enjoyed this reading series and will be recommending it to the school board for next year!

Math:

This last month we have been busy learning about addition to 200.  We learned how to make new groups, patterns and money.  We also began Unit 6 about time.  This has been a difficult unit for several students.  Please review this skill at home as well.  We learned how to tell time to the hour, half hour, five minutes and minute.  We also learned about elapsed time and calendars.  We will begin Unit 7:  Tables and Graphs, next week.

Science:

We finished our unit on biomes this month.  It was very interesting learning about animals and plants from each of the 6 biomes around the world.  We read about Martin Luther King, Jr. and discussed his life and how he has affected us.  We also began our unit on simple machines.  We will be learning about 3 machines:  lever, inclined plane and wedge.  Next we are onto magnets!
