Mrs. Hemstock's Music Class

The Music Connection

April

2010

Welcome to Music Class!

It has been a wonderful year of making music.  We have covered units on Instruments of the Orchestra, Composers, Rhythm Instruments, Xylaphones and Musical Activities such as musical games and dances.  The older students were able to spend a number of weeks learning to play the keyboard.  We spent quite a bit of time studying Music Around the World including Africa, Latin America, the Pacific and Asia.  We had fun getting ready for our program in February.  "E-I-E-I Oops" and "The Emperor's New Clothes" went very well and were enjoyable musicals to present.

We are finishing our Keyboard Unit.  The Kindergarteners and 1st graders will have a couple of days to explore the keyboard and learn a melody using five fingers.  The 2nd and 3rd graders have been practicing and can play some simple melodies.

It's been a good year.  We will close the year with a look at JAZZ.  We will learn composers.  Students will listen to real life stories about musicians who write jazz music.  Other end of the year acitivites will include dancing "The Chicken Dance," "The Limbo" and "The Macarena."  I've enjoyed working with your children this year.  Remember to share 'your love of music' with your child/ren this summer.

Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at ehemstock@spartan.org
